When Culture and Good Music Collide---An Unforgettable Birthday Celebration is Born!!

Last weekend while most college football fans were getting together for one of the biggest college games of the year here in the upstate of South Carolina. Yeap you got it, The Clemson Tigers vs. the Carolina Game Cocks went down in Clemson, S.C. What most don't know is I'm a Carolina fan whether it be the Game Cocks or Panthers. But I'm not a fanatic (fan-addict, addicted, addiction) as you can plainly see it right there in the word but that's a side  issue.

Being absent minded that day I received a phone call reminding me that traffic would be heavy due to Saturdays game day  traffic. But all would end up just dandy little did I know before the evening would end thinking only at that moment about the dreaded bumper to bumper traffic.

Making my way through the city of purple and orange with tiger paws laced on almost every other vehicle on the road that day, I patiently waded through heavy traffic on my way to Seneca, SC. to play a surprise birthday party.  But this was not to be a typical birthday bash of which I'm accustomed.  Soon after my set-up people started to trickle in but what was so different this time, was people were so beautifully attired in  African cultural garb. I'm making this point here, because you seldom see African Americans (so-called Black People) in upstate S.C. proud to represent and tap back into their African cultural roots.  We all know the unsaid motto "You can be called African American just don't dress like it nor act like it." Whether we wish to admit it or not. Up until the earlier part of this year with  the premiere of Black Panther, years back the only time I would remotely see a brother or sister in African garb would be at church gatherings during black history month. Truth is Truth!

Being those who are close to me very well know I'm an extremely conscience brother that just happens to be a Dj by trade who has advocated  in the past and present the importance about knowledge of self and researching our roots for the actual facts. Many will vouch on my behalf to that fact. This is not an article but a just a small commemoration to everyone in that building that night in honor of Ms Rose Marie Vance. The energy was so positive, so much fun and divine love filled the air and dance floor.  These words are just a small memento of the gratitude to show how much they touched my soul that nite. When self-hating shadow people say black folks don't know how to act..THEY LIE, when they say we are all ashamed of out African roots THEY LIE. Proof everyone doesn't need a movie to be proud of who we are by nature is what I observed. The only bad thing about that night being my road manager and I didn't have our dasheki's shirts packed that evening. (Lol) Check the video below.

Just What Is This Red Velvet Cafe?--That Has So Many People Talking!!

Favor Edition Coming Soon.

Many have asked, many have wondered, many have pondered, many have been simply misinformed about this one question. What is or where is exactly this Red Velvet Café? People say hey Tuc.. “I wanted to checkout this place you and Kevin are promoting but I wasn’t quite sure of what it was.” So as most visionaries when they see a void in their immediate surroundings they learn to swiftly formulate an idea in an attempt to fill that vacancy hopefully.

The gift and curse to such progressive thinking is that social revolutionary movements are met with positivity in most cases, yet suspicion albeit a laudable undertaking sometimes it’s slow for people to catch on. In theory it may be due to the fact that people like us are the first to hit the barbed wire so to speak.

Now I will attempt to clear-up the ambiguity on just what the Red Velvet Café is and isn’t.

The concept was conceived close to a decade ago by Mr. Kevin Norris and a few friends, a local African-American Andersonian from the South-East Anderson community district. Being a member of the teacher profession, he models himself after the age old maxim—“Each One Teach One” by example. Kevin is an advocate of positive neighborhood community functions, through his many endeavors he attempts to make a difference in the lives of folks of all ages in downtrodden sectors of the A.N.D. aka the city of Anderson, through charitable works. He is also a connoisseur of classic seventies, eighties, and nineties music of diverse genres. I dubbed him an old soul from the southside type brother. At that juncture this is where I guess we mesh and the prelude to how I joined forces with him to help augment his brain-child referred to as the “Red Velvet Café show production.

The Last Edition was hosted at Break-Time Sports Bar..

Similar to Kevin I deem myself a socially conscience individual of astute awareness and equally diversified musically as a Tru Skool 90’s era Dj. Before he invited me aboard his music and poetry Cafe production soul train he remarked one-time that I was like one of the local pioneering Djs in the city that he had often heard about coming up but never met. Then he came to the shop (ECP) one faithful day, right away we automatically, and so naturally clicked. As it is often said in showbiz—The Rest Is History!

Showbiz and entertainment can be likened to a relationship…You have to have good chemistry with your partner if you are going to have any chance at succeeding.

So just again what is it?

The Red Velvet Café first and foremost is a musical poetry show production akin to other popular show productions like “A Street Car Named Desire” or a more modern take would be likened to “Hamilton” in a certain sense but with a twist of Russell Simmons Def Comedy Jam. But without the stratospheric budget and scaled down immensely to showcase the bevy of talented local poets and musicians we have in the area. It originally begun at the 1025 S. Main St. location in Anderson but has since then become a mobile show production as well.

The Red Velvet Café is for the select few (Classy Grown & Sexy Business Professionals from all walks of life, races and religions) who enjoy indulging in good food, fun, Classic Soul, Funk, Rock, House, RnB from the golden years of the past mixed with real hip hop gems that received little to no radio air-play. Those who clamor for a place to gather, mingle, reminisce and listen to good music, violence laden-free lyrics, with limited cursing while absorbing the positive charged vibes. Thus, Kevin has to always stress in disclaimer fashion, this is not an event for typical younger audiences but we welcome younger folks who know how to behave and have a good time. Because that’s what we are about. EDUCATING, ENTERTAINING AND HAVING FUN!

The Red Velvet Café welcomes all poets and musicians of all ages and ethnicity, we ask that you be prepared, or if you have a music track please forward it to Kevin ahead of time so that we will have it cued at the time of your performance. This adds continuity to the show itself and ensures things run smoothly for our attendees.

So now that you have a bit more clarity on precisely what the Red Velvet Café is about, we’d love for you to come out or bring a significant other and experience this electric atmosphere for yourself. Step out with your best fly attire and be ready to hob knob with like-minded clientele, engage in productive conversation perhaps, and possibly exchange business cards.

You may never know who you just may bump into there. We seek to give those who live inside the city of Anderson and outside a different flavor, a fresh new alternative as opposed to the same ole club scene. Judging by the buzz as of late we’re generating and from social media feedback, it appears we are not far from reaching our goal.
Bringing the community together on a positive note is our own job and responsibility, we’re doing our part…now it’s time for you to do yours. Join Us!

As par for the course on this site. We invite all comments and feedback. We'd like to know your experience if you have attended this show before.

K-TRIK-E...The A.N.D's 2018 Bounce Back Veteran Proves Why Once Again!!!!!!!

Michael Collier whose stage alias is K-TRIK-E( all caps as he often reminds me) is a recording artist/song writer for JETGLAM Ent that most locals in the city of Anderson are familiar with. Recently he released his forthcoming video installment titled “Thug Love” a martial arts infused narrative which explores life, love and betrayal through his visionary eyes, and artistic creative expression. When the A.N.D.’s veteran recording artist approached me about making a cameo appearance in his latest video conception, of course I had no reservations. We’ve shared mutual respect for one another for years.

You see, being acquainted with TRIK UNCEE since the early start of his burgeoning career in the mid to late nineties.

I’ve witness a few of his ups and downs, triumphs and failures as he traveled the rough and rugged road to his present-day metamorphosis into the resilient die-hard entertainment artist I know him as today. He’s been maligned by his detractors described as mediocre, overrated, can’t rap, too old, he isn’t this, doesn’t have that and the list goes on!

Now allow me to expound succinctly on what he does have, that maybe some of these envious would be “detractors” in reality dis-tractors, don’t possess or apparently over-look!

1.     A solid working track record in and around the A.N.D.’s entertainment community and beyond which spans over two decades. FACT!
2.     Countless hours of onstage experience in front of audiences which translates as marvelous stage presence. Which is only attained by hard earned experience. FACT!
3.     He’s an advocate of the Do-For-Self mind-set and encourages other artist young and old to work together through example, not just in lip service. His latest video demonstrates this. FACT!
4.     As a seasoned maturated veteran artist, he seeks to steer clear of today’s self-destructive thuggery, redundant pill popping messages in music, seemingly surgically saturating the air waves and marketed to our children. FACT!
5.     He demonstrates how, perseverance, and Integrity can breed longevity but may not necessarily ensure monetary success nor popularity.  FACT!

Clip from the Video, Recorded on location in North Anderson, SC

A great analogy of this today would be, such NFL athletes like Terrell Owens and Collin Kapernick. Before twisting your mouth up, allow me to illustrate this thought provoking parallel first. Both men have excelled in their respective fields but are loathed now in the media for essentially not conforming or challenging the accepted mainstream norms.

Sacrificing life, limb, millions of dollars, at the expense of being black balled (a derogatory term in itself) plus demonized for not being the quintessential team player.  Whether right or wrong, is subject to one’s interpretation or opinion. An opinion is just that, not FACT! These men similar in nature to the K-TRIK-E plight (NOT MONEY BUT IN PRINCIPAL) found it difficult to compromise certain principals they strongly held. Deciding to circumvent the Go-Along-To-Get-Along doctrine that so many stand in-lines to adopt this present day. Simply for acceptance and worldly wealth! These unique individuals will never win the popularly contest, revolutionary thinking seldom does.

History proves that!

But if one is truly objective, it takes only a simple cursory look at an individual’s stat sheet. That is to say, we may not like a person’s character or maybe even personality but we must respect their accomplishments. Giving credit where it is due regardless of personal feeling is what some folks struggle in da A.N.D. entertainment pool to do. THOSE RULED BY LOWER EMOTIONS like ANGER, GREED,JEALOUSLY  and last but not least the destructive disease of SELF HATE!!

I can empathize with K-TRIK-E on a certain level in that regard, because djtuc999 the brand has its detractors also as they scurry about thinking they are undetected. So, my advice to you brother is stay humble at all times, and continue to MASTER YOUR CRAFT. Promote harmony, culture, empowerment and watch the commercial conformist, that chase the almighty dollar surrendering their morals, fade quickly over time into oblivion along with there souls in tow!
For we the dedicated laborers of decades past OVERSTAND the fruits of mastering any skill.

And what is that you may ask?.......Preserving culture, giving in charity, honing fundamental’s will keep you employable and thus the money and opportunities will be chasing you and not the other way around.
Unlike the frauds, the posers, imposters, impersonators those with snake oil gimmicks but no real substance. Well…….. I WARN THEM,

The Daddy Denominator..Fact or Fiction? YOU DECIDE!

Op-Ed Written By: Guest Editor Simply Sisireia & republished By djtuc999.com

One man, five women and seven childrenDoesn’t seem real, but it is and it is more common than you may think.  This is something that has become somewhat of an epidemic, especially within the black community; multiple women sharing children by the same man.

What’s more important sometimes in these situations, is the fact that the children suffer the most.  Sometimes the adults are so selfish that they neglect the most precious and undoubtedly the most positive things to come out of these situations, the children.

Children Are The Future. Yours and Mine..

I want to speak to women that may be in these situations.  Specifically I want to say, Stop depriving your children of relationships with their siblings because you are angry with the way things turned out between you and their father. So things didn’t work out, that’s no reason to keep your children from getting to know their brothers and sisters. They are family, no matter how you feel about it. That will never change. There is a way that parents can come together for the sake of their children. Let us stop raising children that are angry with people that you won’t even allow them to get to know because your feelings got hurt or your ego was bruised.

In reflecting on the current state of the “United States of America,” we are more divided than ever. We are divided as a nation, we can’t afford to be divided within our own communities. Now, more than ever, it is time for us to join together. It’s time out for acting irresponsibly and immaturely. Our children are watching us and counting on us. How can we expect things to get better if we aren’t willing to show them the right way.

Controversial Father's Day Card Pulled from stores in June 2018
.

Parenting is all about sacrifice. We have to put away those hurt feelings, move on with our lives and stop making our children pay the ultimate price for our mistakes. Our children aren’t mistakes–allowing ourselves to get involved with someone outside of a healthy relationship is on us. We have to own that!!!

The sooner that this ownership takes place, the sooner we can come together for the sake of our children and for our communities. The children are our future. If we don’t teach them the importance of unity within their own family, how can we expect to come together to unite for the good of the community, for the good of the world?

How One Of The Greatest DJ Tributes Came To Fruition In The Summer Of 2018--In da A.N.D.

Pic from the actual show.

It's been a week or so, since one of the greatest summer show events took place on the out skirts of the city of Anderson. Also, it’s been a while since I last had the time to drop a fresh new article up on my site. In a way I guess that could be a good thing, because that means I have had less time due to obligations, involving family, spiritual improvement, shows and business clientele. I feel at this stage in my life and career I’m fortunate that a lot of people still think of my Dj skill set as viable.

And as for insignificant negative folks i.e. " haters" I think is the termed used nowadays, I'm to busy involved running my business, my brand, and helping other like minded folks making differences in the community to pay any attention.

No better example of this than at the DJ Super Police Commemoration Weekend of June 30’ 2018 in remembrance of an Anderson legendary Dee-Jay that was well known for his vibrant personality and signature police siren imitation on the mic in the mid-eighties. Hence the title “Police”. The weather was perfect that evening and the mood of the audience in attendance was electric, plus permeating  in the air with anticipation of the celebration at hand. The all-star lineup of some of the A.N.D.’s top jocks ready to set the stage a blaze at the Anderson VFW Post 6089 located on Scarborough Rd.

Names like DJ Terry B, DJ Jam One, DJ T-Rock, DJ Flea, DJ Big Mike, DJ Fresh and of course yours truly. With the exclusion of Big Mike most of the guys on this ticket have travel around the Dj circuit multiple times around the city of Anderson for years. Earning well deserved accolades and hard-earned reputations. As I helped to co-orchestrate this event along with Terry B that evening, speaking with various people, most stopped me momentarily to share their thoughts.

Comments such as,” I respect what you guys have come together to do” others enunciated “we appreciated what you are doing to celebrate him [DJ Police] and honor his family. That was only a few comments that I remember, but there were many wonderful others.

At this time allow me to share with all the back story to provide a bit of context of how the whole idea and event came about. Straight from the horse’s mouth so to speak.

Most active Dj’s new and old in the A.N.D. (Anderson) are familiar with me through computer repairs, Dj laptop set-ups, clean-ups, my podcast, reputation and or sales at ECPElectric City Pawn” downtown Anderson.  Dj T-Rock whom I’ve personally known since the record “Planet Rock” and the Boom Box were in style. I know right, we go back like Cadillac seats. I don’t mind go ahead and laugh! But back to business, T-Rock initially came up with the idea months ago to celebrate the beloved Super Jock by doing a show. He was to contact his wife at his job, due to the fact they worked at the same place at that time. I think it was on the campus of A.U. Anderson University if my memory serves me correctly. Unfortunately, Roc who is always involved in actives with his young musically talented two daughters, was forced to delay the idea for a brief period.

So as fate would have it, Dj Jam One brings his laptop into the shop because of an issue with Serato (a DJ Software) he wanted me to look at. Approximately 15 minutes after, Dj Terry B stops in briefly from cruising in the downtown Anderson area, on his spider three-wheeler motorcycle. It should not be a surprise, that when three or more DJ’s convene spontaneously they typically tend to talk about Dj-ing, music and shows. Right here is the cream prelude to one of the biggest summer shows as it sprang to life.  Pushing forth, if not the greatest thus far, celebratory show commemorating a popular, hometown DJ legend here in the city of Anderson.

It been a while since the jocks got together, like they did at Pompidoes years ago.” I remarked in conversation. Referring to the former Club on Hi-way 28 back then, with a show entitled “Return Of The Dj’s Live." Featuring a bevy of Anderson’s prominent Dj’s, New Skool & Old school. Such names as Dj Lawyer Scott, Dj Front Row Joe, Dj Master Q, Dj Two-Tons, Dj Super Police, Dj T-Rock, Dj Gary B, Dj Pimp, Dj Fresh Dj Master D, and myself folks.

Caption of the original Return of the Dj's poster from 2010 pics at top portion of photo.

So now that you have been well informed, shall we proceed.

Terry replies as I am paraphrasing” That would be good, let’s put something together then!”
I respond in kind “ Dj T Rock had pitched to me an idea he came up with, and that is he’s interested in doing a show in honor of Dj Super Police because him and I remembered doing a show [Pompidoes 2010] with him.
Sounds great I like it, I’ll call Rodney (he Books events at our local VFW) & few more jocks and see can we get a date” he replied. And as you now know……The REST IS HISTORY!!

Hopefully the record is set straight for any and all who were curious. If you missed this show and live in the Anderson area, you lost out on one of the most heart-felt, compassionate, positively energized tributes that the urban Dj and entertainment community of Anderson has put forth to date. This is my opinion of course some will say. But I’ve been in both sectors for over two decades and you would be hard press to find another active urban music historian in this city who knows it like I do. Check out the Live Sets inserted in this article folks!!

ENJOY!!

BREAKING: Anderson's Chadwick Boseman To Host SNL Next Month

According to Danette Chavez @ the avclub.com

Chadwick Boseman has played James Brown and Thurgood Marshall, and recently proved that he could launch a billion-dollar movie franchise with panache. Now he’s going to give sketch comedy a shot: Entertainment Weekly reports that the Black Panther star will host Saturday Night Live on April 7.

Boseman will be joined by musical guest Cardi B, whose full-length debut is also expected next month. The Marshall actor is the first announced host of April 2018, but he’s the latest in a long line of MCU actors to make their way to Studio 8-H. Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Josh Brolin, and Chris Pratt have all taken turns hosting SNL, though they weren’t promoting two Marvel films at once. That’s all Boseman, who stars in acclaimed Black Panther and the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War.
Click here to read the popular article I wrote about our hometown local hero last month & the release of The Movie Black Panther here in the city of Anderson, SC.

Panther Power Resurrects This Week In Anderson For Black History Month: --- An Epic Celebration For All!!

Chadwick Boseman as The Black Panther

As most of us from the urban community of the A.N.D. (Anderson, S.C.) are aware of, this looks to be an unforgettable Black History Month for African-Americans, not just us but the entire city will be basking in the lime-light nationwide this February sixteenth. We have our own gracing the big-screen in director Ryan Coogler’s Marvel Comic Classic entitled “Black Panther”. It will be featuring an Anderson Home-Town prodigy in a leading role by the name of Chadwick (Chad) Boseman. With unprecedented anticipation and high reviews, it could be easily one of the best Marvel Comic hero movies to date.

In my opinion the scheduled timing of this momentous release couldn’t have been more paramount.  During a time when this country (America) is more polarized and divided than it’s ever been since the turbulent racial angst of the sixties. I feel most can agree that Dr. King if still living, would be most delighted and would assist in celebrating this success with us. Allow me to put this in proper context, who would have fathom that a small-city like Anderson would have produced a home-grown talent like the 41-year-old Mr. Boseman, a graduate from Howard University, and T.L. Hanna High School would be cast as a prominent Black Super-Hero directed by another African-American whose Rocky sequel “Creed” earned rave reviews, next to grossing $119 million at the box office.

Mr. Boseman, the director Coogler and other cast members greet a fan at the Asia premiere in Seoul.

Don’t misconstrue my point, the A.N.D. is teeming with untapped urban talent in its entertainment sector, such as P&W Films, the local movie company that produced the city’s cult classic “Child Support”, acclaimed actor Adam Minarovich whom appeared in the early episodes of the series “The Walking Dead” just to name a few.  Make no mistake you’re still in the Marvel Universe, this touted proto installment promises to submerge you in an element of a hidden world in Africa defined by traditions with advanced technologies. Hopefully with this type of story-line it just may re-instill some pride back in segments of some African-American viewers, in 2018 I’ve encountered on social media those whom have a problem with acknowledging their very own ancestral roots. I find it ignorantly fascinating to say the least!!

Mr. Boseman and director Ryan Coogler

Some of us in the African-American community can identify with, there is always the person or persons we’ve heard exclaimed, “I’m not from Africa I was born in Texas” etc etc. In today’s media spin climate, the term may not be considered politically correct as of late but we deal with facts on this site regardless. NO FAKE NEWS or POLITICAL PARTISAN B.S. is propagated here.  But I digress and will save that discussion for another article. The magnitude for the release of this epic movie (Black Panther) is very significant, the first comic-based studio movie featuring a Black hero (from Anderson) at its center, since “Blade” in 1998. Please make note that even Time Magazine has even gotten  on-board  with its latest cover photo high-lighting Mr. Boseman in a blockbuster film   featuring a super hero which traditionally they aren't known to do, according to Matthew Erao a writer for ScreenRantdotcom.  " TIME isn’t known for highlighting blockbuster films or superhero movies, so it’s certainly something to see a rising star like Boseman featured on the latest cover. Like Wonder Woman before it, Black Panther is a comic book adaptation that comes paired with a certain amount of cultural and political weight. Rather than avoid that, however, Black Panther has been embracing its impact and legacy. And for Boseman, the way Wakanda blends elements of fantasy and reality is a big part of what makes the movie special ''

Freelance Journalist and Radio Host Jamil Smith (@JamilSmith)  expands further on the deeper significance of the backdrop being portrayed as a fantasy African Nation, which I felt was a key point he alludes too.
“You might say that this African nation is fantasy. But to have the opportunity to pull from real ideas, real places and real African concepts, and put it inside of this idea of Wakanda – that’s a great opportunity to develop a sense of what that identity is, especially when you’re disconnected from it.”

The mix of Afrocentrism, feminism, spirituality, in an enigmatic world with Hi-Tech advancements, sounds as if it was crafted from one of the many  Dr. Malachi Z. K. York’s dynamic publications, which makes it irresistible for me personally.

Man From Planet Rizq authored by Dr. Malachi Z. York

I find the theme motivating while simultaneously making me so proud and I’m betting many more folk in Anderson share these same sentiments. Just to know a brother from my city Anderson in South Carolina will have a lead role once again in a major motion picture. We loved you as Jackie Robinson in the movie “42”, as the God-Father of Soul James Brown in “Get On Up” and I’m sure we will love you even more in “Black Panther”. I’m asking all in the A.N.D. to go out as I will and show support at the theaters on the weekend of February 16, 2018 in honor of another one of our local hometown talents, clearly, he has broken through another barrier into the mainstream.  Talent, initiative, hard-work and being ready when opportunity knocks can open the doors to success, this is proof it can happen, actor Chadwick Boseman and his subsequent achievements  is an example we can all learn from.

4-4 Water--- Wants To Know How You Feel Now? (Must See Video)

Make no mistake, it gives me great pleasure to help get behind Lerion ( 4-4 Water) Walker and doing my part to help assist this brother with the promotion of his new forthcoming album #NOSleepCampaign 2.0.

I've done this for many artist and also Dj's from the City of Anderson (da A.N.D.) for many years now. I ask for no reward, recognition or special favors from none.  Most folks that know of me, know my track record and organically respect me for my work. Its not really work when one loves what they do. First things first though, I've known 4-4 Water for years and I'm not the bandwagon jumping type. So for you naysayers who would  suggest differently, you had best check my resume' and I will check yours to see your body of work, when supporting other than yourself.

It frustrates me in a sense when hard working artist from the A.N.D. like 4-4 have been grinding for years, producing quality lyrical content, mixtapes, solid musical production and his own hometown is still slow to support him.  In fact, he was featured on one of my classic "A.N.D.'s Greatest Misses" mixes available on my podcast djtuc999TheMobileApp MixShow just click here.

Is it because a lot of his content has creative meaning, because his word-play is deemed to intelligent for the streets, not dumbed down enuff for contemporary rap audiences of today? What! What! What is it? In my opinion this is precisely what turns many would be consumers, potential new listeners away because of 75 percent of the crap that is pushed on radio, that is passed for good music. Pop music does not always equate to good talent.  I'm old skool and it doesn't matter to us types how many times you force play a garbage song in an hour on radio, it won't make us say that artist has real talent. But it will make us say they have  great marketing. Sponsors with unlimited cash, will not make an artist dope but it will get his or her music heard over others who may have more talent in their pinky finger than they have in their whole body. Unbeknownst to most millennials, it was us Dj's who were responsible for breaking local artist first and radio had to follow us. NOW WE FOLLOW RADIO!! We had the power not the program director. Times have definitely change & not for the better in my outspoken opinion.

4-4 Water and many others like him are the rose that grows through the concrete, the black coal that endured the pressure that is now transforming into the diamond with that illustrious shine. The one that is now beginning to sparkle, shimmer and attract the eyes of those who clamor for  a different sound and message originating from A.N.D. S.C.. After watching the video, you will see his message speaks for itself.  4-4 I was down with you during your South Drama days and I still support you now bro.
