Due to the fact of it being Black History Month or African American History and Culture Month, whichever you personally choose to observe. I felt it my duty as an African American male journalist, editor, businessman, webmaster, blogger and long standing staple of the entertainment community here in the city of Anderson, to help pay tribute, celebrate, and augment the locally grown achievements of the beautiful and talented lady of song Ms. Loretta Holloway. In my opinion whether planned haphazardly or not it couldn’t have been better timing than in the month of the January/February edition of Anderson Magazine for this amazing local icon to grace their cover.

As I find myself evolving more and more every year I continue to stand in awe of strong enterprising women whom have risen to incredible heights of success in-spite of seemingly insurmountable odds.  Naturally this Belton resident is an empowering role model for women and inspires me as a male entrepreneur to continue on the path of positivity reminding of the rewards it can bring. No chauvinistic male ego with me folks. Realizing many of the urban readers that visit my site many of whom reside here locally probably don’t read “Anderson Magazine” due to it’s lack of hmmm….shall we say “urban diversity.” Hint hint editors! I must confess though that after gazing upon the latest elegant cover shot featuring the incomparable Ms. Holloway. I became instantly drawn to read the accompanying article contained inside.

I wish more artist would take this approach with some of the records they produce nowadays.

Very well written and highly informative, I tip my hat to the magazines author/writer Jay Wright for a superb job of chronicling South Carolina's First Lady of Song along with the many accolades, honors, and awards she deservingly has been bestowed with. Yes a real life living in the flesh Jazz legend from Anderson County! I have always heard my father talk of Jazz greats such as Lena Horne, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, John Coltrane etc. But now I can kind of gloat just a little and say we have one that organically rose right here in my very own neck-of-the woods. My purpose is to salute Ms. Loretta Holloway in this small blurb, you are our shining Queen of Jazz a real life living breathing example of class, sophistication, exemplifying charity, talent, humility, elegance and the importance of perseverance.

I suggest all mothers and fathers take the time to share with your young daughters the story of Loretta Holloway. I found it positively spiritually uplifting, inspirational, motivational and emotionally moving. This world right now could use a lot more positivity; I think we all can agree with that! To Ms. Loretta Holloway- “South Carolina’s First Lady of Song” I feel I speak for many in the urban community of da A.N.D. (Anderson) when I say we are extremely proud of you because you have represented us well and continue too do so. Thank you so much for being that beacon of excellency from amongst our communtiy !

9 Things NOT To Do On a First Date--Confessions From An Honest Woman!! (Lady Yaz Exculsive)

Since I've been divorced, I have been on a few dates. Some have been great and some have been not so great.  Because of these experiences, I felt the need to encourage my brothers and sisters, and give a few pointers on what NOT to do when you are on a date with the opposite sex.  Now, here's my disclaimer. This article is not to bash men or women in any way. We all know that men and women are not perfect by any means. We also know that because of various circumstances, many may not know how to act on a first date...so here are some suggestions to help you:

1.  Everyone is not the "One".  Many of us desire to be loved and appreciated, but please hear me: just because you have a great conversation and you sound like a great candidate for a relationship...doesn't mean he or she is the one you are intended for you to be with.  We have to remember, that it's just a first date, so don't plan your wedding just yet. And trust me, your date will probably do something or say something that you will irritate you to the fullest before the evening is over.  It takes some time to truly get to know a person and you're not going to know a person overnight.  This takes time. So take your date for what it is, enjoy it to the fullest, and take it one day at a time.

2.  Communication is key.  I believe this is the was one the most difficult things that men and women have to do, but it's so important and vital when building the foundation in any relationship or friendship.  You have to communicate to be productive.  How can men or women understand each other, if we do not communicate our thoughts, concerns, issues, likes, or dislikes, unless we talk?  I believe we don't communicate because corporately we are afraid of how we will be perceived. We're afraid that someone will stop liking us, or they will get upset.  Look, if someone truly likes you for who you are, they will respect what you have to say...seriously.  So speak up...for real.

3.  Be Yourself. Unless you're Oprah, Jay-Z, or Beyonce (naming these people are so random, LOL) don't put on any heirs for anyone or try to live a lifestyle, that you cannot live, just to impress a first date.  Be you.  If anyone cannot appreciate your uniqueness, they don't deserve you.  But please, please, please, do not live in a lie to impress any man or women.  Trust me, that will come back to bite you in the you-know-where.  Please, don't spend money you don't have, or spend it to think you are going to get some extra rewards later. This doesn't work either...and if that's what you went on the date for, you never should have went on a date in the first place.

4. No SEX in the Champagne Room.  Please my brothers and sisters, do not have sex on the first date. First of all, you don't know this person from Adam or Eve.  You don't know their sexual background, their sexual orientation (yes I said it), overall you don't know anything about him or her. You are just getting to know them, so why would you give them something so precious and valuable so soon?  Understanding that many of us could be lonely and desire a mate, and desire love, but this is the wrong way to go about it.  Like many of our mothers would say use to say, "Be patient and wait." In the meantime, it's great to date for all the right reasons, but do not, I repeat do not, get yourself in a situation, that you won't be able to get out of.

5. Scheming for a Five-Star Meal I know women who won't go out with a guy unless he offers to drop a week's paycheck on a multi-course meal. "That way I know that he thinks I'm worth it," the gold-digging T.H.O.T type...I mean, the silly women per say. News flash: If you put a price tag on your company, you're going to end up with guys who put a price tag on your company. That's illegal in most states, unseemly in all. Aren't we all interested in getting to know each other?

6. Complaining About Your Debt Toward credit-card companies, parents, loan sharks or anyone else. When you tell a guy you're having money trouble, what the guy hears is, "She's looking for someone to bail her out." This isn't fair on the part of the guy, it might not be realistic, but it's what a guy hears. So keep any worrisome financial situations to yourself for now.

7. Analyzing The Ex This one is difficult to avoid, as it's a common question posed by your date. The preferred posture here is one of mild regret, hard-earned wisdom and cool disinterest. "We were headed in different directions" works, as does "I think I'm a different person now, interested in different things." Are those vague and murky? A little, but I promise you that they beat some of the more common responses.  

These include: "He was a cold, cruel man, and I will never allow myself to be treated like that again," and/or, "He didn't know what he had, and he will spend the rest of his life mourning my loss." When you bad-mouth your exes without taking any blame yourself for the failure of the relationship, men think you're a woman who doesn't take responsibility. And that's not so attractive especially if he finds out you played the role of the side chick. Yes it happens more than you can imagine.

8. Don’t Share Your Desire for Marriage and Children right off the Bat You yearn for a deep connection, enduring love and a partner with whom you can stroll on the beach shores together as the years roll by? You long to hear the delighted cries of toddlers, to feel the ineffable joy of parenthood? That's sweet. That's really, really sweet. The problem is, if you talk about it on a first date, chances are you're going to frighten the guy away.

That might be because the guy will feel objectified, that he'll feel like you see him less as a human being with hopes and dreams of his own and more as a breeding machine. Or it might be because he's genetically programmed to spread his seed and to unconsciously avoid any kind of life-long partnership and can only be tricked into such an arrangement over time. 

Who knows? It's a mystery. The point is, this topic is best reserved for later.

But isn't it self-defeating and dishonest to withhold information from a man in whom you're interested? If you can't share the most intimate and genuine parts of yourself, aren't you setting yourself up for an inauthentic relationship? Won't you be doomed to always be pretending you're something that you're not?  Some food for thought ladies and gents.

9. Look Into Them A Little Too Much a (Facebook No! No!) Preparing for a first date by looking the person up on all social media channels is fine. But cyber-stalking to the point of ending up on their Facebook statuses from four years ago? That's a little excessive. Knowing too much information about the person can almost hurt you in a way - first of all, you can easily slip up and give yourself away, and second, it removes a lot of the mystery, which is the fun part. 

Aside from that, "getting to know them" via the Internet can give you the wrong impression of them. Save that for real life. Common sense dictates “Real Friends, viable life partners and BFF’s are organically grown in the Real World not in Cyberspace”. After all mother nature has a unique way of bringing two people (compatible souls) together. Problem most time is we tend not to listen to her out of superficial biases created by unrealistic reality TV shows .

Evolution Of This Music We Call Hip Hip---AGREE Or DISAGREE?

Most wouldn’t believe all the different stylistic origins, derivative forms, fusion genres, and sub-genres of Hip Hop that exist today.  We like to put Hip Hop in a decade chunk order, starting around the era of Kurtis Blow’s “The Breaks” and slam on a cherry of D.R.A.M.’s “Broccoli”. As a product of the year of 1990, I can safely say there’s a great deal of head scratching if you are not open minded about the speeding Hip Hop muscle car that’s pounding its way through the bricks of steady molding and change.

“Change” isn’t a word that most people really look forward to being associated with Hip Hop now. Personally I love the constant jerking around of the ARTIST perspective in the studio. The Andy Warhols. The Picassos. (Though it may seem as though Jay Z sees himself as just and only that).

The Van Goghs. The Basquaits. As a friend of mine would say “Do what you want with the brush even if people don’t understand Art. Somebody is always watching.” I feel as though the same concept applies in Hip Hop. The lyrics are the brush. The wax is the canvas.  I will not disclose how Hip Hop has changed in detailed elements, however I will speak on it from a personal perspective. I remember when my mother drove a red 1996 Ford Taurus, we mostly listened to R&B. My mother was a single parent and considered Rap back then to be a little explicit for the ears of young school girls. She was more in tune to the 90’s R&B wave of male and female songbirds. However, occasionally, she would tune the radio and we could listen to, what I consider to be classics in my lifetime; Jay Z, Tupac, Big Pun, Bone Thugs N Harmony, and Nas. (Again everyone, I repeat, that this is a personal perspective!)

I don’t believe that it is truly possible for me to put all the one-time hit makers, to the many classics that have been reproduced just because I wasn’t a teenager in the 90s, but instead, a little kid.

However, I will say that there was a particular moment that I wouldn’t forget that sketches the basic theme of Hip Hop that was fashioned at that time. I reminisce riding with my sister in the backseat of my mom’s car and the song “Hard Knock Life” was playing in the speakers. My sister and I would stammer out some lyrics that we generated by ourselves, trying to act cool as though we knew all the lyrics. Our mother would quickly look into the rear-view at us, and correct and repeat the real lyrics in a stern voice. Then she would make us comprehend and appreciate what the rapper was trying to say. I still saw it funny, so I was assigned a report on the song.

She explained the meaning of “Hard Knock Life”; the theme song of Annie, transposed into, not just a song, but an anthem about how he overcame life in the ghetto to achieve massive success. Jay Z established independence. Tupac established change and a voice, particularly for troubled black youth. Big Pun established culture. Bone Thugs-N-Harmony established originality. Nas established heritage. While these impressions could be learned through society, it was incorporated into Hip Hop. As a kid, Hip Hop had significance and meaning. Period. Every artist tried to embody work that could potentially be legendary and nothing less. An album was crafted with producers who kept the artist’s character alive and the themes relevant. It wasn’t created if it didn’t have a message.

Now, that is in no way slamming how Hip Hop is currently. I embrace it with wide arms, because now it expresses more in terms of rebellion, maybe with politics, gangs, and sexual innuendo, hardship, and deeply rooted pain and sadness. Expressionism; let that sink in for a minute. “Today’s” artists cannot rap about hardships of yesterday, they could only dance to the beats.  Even growing up as a teenager in the 2000s was a diverse dialogue than the 90s.

 It was less vicious and less racially tense. It was in my eyes the pretty boy era where rappers incorporated sex or romance into their lyrics. Rappers were more prone to writing about a lover than a police officer. I snuck in CDs into my house that had unsurmountable amounts of profanity and explicit content. You name it, I had it and I loved every moment. Constantly making sure the track was on “Repeat X1” until I memorized songs. During that time, you still had rappers who captured and held your attention for a long time lyrically as well as marketing wise. Ludacris, 50 Cent, Eminem, T.I., Lil’ Wayne and more are examples of artists who broaden the window of Hip Hop with dazzling technique. Rappers also started realizing how to market and brand their acts as well. Money didn’t have to be made through dealing to fund a potential powerhouse label. Simply investing in stocks, franchises, or just tagging LLC to the end of the business name started putting up antennas.

Assort this along with the prompt stages of the Information Age, (Internet, MP3s, etc.) and you WILL get a concoction of samples, auto tunes, and quickly pressed compilations. Not to mention, the conception of the mixtape, which back in the 90s was either a demo for a record label or a recorded playlist of your hot favorite singles that you strung together by yourself. The founders and pioneers of Hip Hop created a Frankenstein that they became even bigger and badder.

Regardless of how we as society compares it to the past, it’s still going to continue to grow and manifest into something even more surprising or maybe even weirder. Lil UziVert or Otis Redding may be sampled in the next generation to come, but we must not get in the way of the painter’s brush. Someone is buying into the art. Generations are connecting, reflecting, and responding to who’s next. Also, Hip Hop has never went by the rule books, ever. Therefore, I think it’s important to keep pushing and to keep ruffling feathers of those who want to draw within the lines when it comes to the microphone. This isn’t Jazz. 
  

 This is life, as we know it, written, sometimes scribbled down into a whimsical nonsense that lashes out in forms of various frustrations, transgressions, and fears that, most people, act like does not exist in today’s communities and civilization.

Skully and Killz ---- Named Two Out Of 20 Hot Artist To Lookout For in The State Of S.C.

A.N.D./Los Anderson trap rappers Killz and Skully noted as two of S.C.’s top recording artist to lookout for on a list of twenty artists in the whole state according to the blog site Karatewars.com. This is a major achievement that was quietly released back in September that should have been celebrated here in the city more prominently in the entertainment community.  But then again that’s why I saw fit, to create this site to help highlight and augment such notable moments on the local music scene here in Anderson that seem to fly a lot of times under the radar.

 

Anyone who’s knows me will tell you I’m a tru-skool era 90’s Dj  ( meaning the turntable vinyl era before Serato) but just with a healthy appreciation for certain millennial local artist, because I came from the same grind cloth, but as I'm sure you know, just a different style of music. I don’t condone all the messages in modern day trap/bando rap but I do respect their artistic expressions and their grind.

Rapper Skully is the cousin of the late, highly respected and celebrated Jugg Money. Skully has really been creating his own lane on the music scene here in da A.N.D. with the help of his Y.E.A/J.M.E. music management team following in the traditional footsteps and legacy that his cousin Jugg started. I’m happy to see this young brother making a huge impact with his music along with his various eye catching head turning videos all over the web. Representing the pain of his generations struggle for success.

Rapper Killz from A.N.D. S.C.

Rapper Killz is a name I became recently familiar with last year thanks to the popular, talented and beautiful female videographer from Anderson known as Ms.RKAYBEE!. If you are not familiar with her click here for the article I wrote on her a while back. She has been working extensively helping to promote this young A.N.D. music Phenom, propelling his name and helping to launch his career throughout video cyberspace via her signature cinematic visual styles. The “Sky Falling” is one to make note of that really caught my eyes and ears. Watch the video below.

 I don’t know much about Killz personally because I’ve never met him but as an artist I do know he’s talented and from my city that in itself is deserving of our support. A.N.D. STAND-UP and let’s support our own. Los Anderson STAND-UP and support our own. I have always lead by example just look around my website, my plight and motivation is to inspire any and all reading this to do the same, congrats to Skully, congrats to Killz.

You guys are both sterling examples of how talented artist from Anderson are knocking hard at the door and have been since the early nineties, artist like you both inspire old skool kats  like me who came before you, to keep hope alive  because  eventually they are going to have to let the A.N.D. in WORLDWIDE with the respect we deserve. We knocked at the door in the nineties with such groups as Baddazzis, South Flock, Se7ven, Darksyde, South Movement, Sevil, Correseptic etc, but with the aid of this new thing called social media. You guys have the ability to kick that mutha f*%ker in!! I'm fully aware there are some folks out there that don’t think so, but some of you upcoming artist give me hope that those naysayers will be silenced and by default proven wrong.

Follow your dreams, stay positive as you can in this negative world. Achieve your goals but NEVER SELL YOUR SOUL!! Keep grinding….

Meet ILL GATES The "Microsoft Paper" Renaissance-Man Of A.N.D. Hip Hop..

 There are those of us here in the A.N.D. who have grew up musically in the golden era of the hip-hip, remembering the glory days of the skilled emcee accompanied with boom bap drum tracks with a unique chopped soul sample or two here and there. On the latest album release of ILL Gates entitled “Microsoft Paper’’, with this fourteen track expose’ ILL offers a nice reminiscent yet balanced mixture of the retro sound of true skool hip-hop minced with a pinch of today’s contemporary radio sound of rap.

Chadric Wardlaw aka ILL Gates is by no means a new jack on the A.N.D. hip-hop scene, he’s been spitting dope lyrics from as early as the year 2K, continuously representing the city’s Westside for years along with fellow West coast veteran emcees like Nimrod, Doc Webb, and Gheechi Black. ILL has in my opinion during his lengthy rap career been somewhat overshadowed, not due to skill but by his firm conviction not to sell-out his true skool hip hop roots just in order to attempt a run at making a fast buck, by either watering down his music for a contemporary or corporate pop radio sound. Trust me ILL Gattes is having none of that! Never heard of ILL?-- Well check out his verbal flow on this freestyle below..

ILL has worked with some of the best emcees in the A.N.D. from Correseptic to Nimrod as alluded to above and his lyrics are second to none when he steps in the booth. It’s not surprising that most true skool artist mostly stick to the fundamentals, having a huge disdain for fad raps, fad dances, and auto-tune vocal gimmicks. To my knowledge it has been a while since ILL released a full length project for public consumption but he’s been known to drop signature singles such as the likes of “Cloud Atlas” with a complimentary thought provoking video. Check it check-out below! 

The first track setting the tone on his latest album Microsoft Paper is a banging boom bap track called “Girl Watcher” where he boldly declares his attraction to the opposite sex especially those of whom he would like to bend the “A” over when he’s on the scene. It instantly became one of my favorites due to the fact of how honest the record is not to mention how he flipped-it lyrically. Track four is “Chase that Change” featuring the A.N.D’s own original rapper turned actor Kaiotic showcasing a thumping beat laden with a creative sounding Diana Ross and the Supremes sample. It was a refreshing moment to listen to Kaiotic dropping fly lyrics on a true skool hip hip track. I still rock his classic “Hop in the Bucket” joint every once and a while.

The album Microsoft Paper high-lights fresh new artist such as UG and Bone on the soulful laid back song “Still Getting Paid” though it was my first time hearing these Kats I must say they really impressed me with their vocals. Another dope track that caught my attention entitled “Dollars Signs’ produced by the South-Side A.N.D. Mover and Shaker Prafessa. 

ILL articulates his birds-eye point of view from the street level of the A.N.D. when he shouts out how the streets are trill lately around the city. Veteran Gheechi Black makes a couple of special guest appearances alongside ILL on a track entitled “My Window” that kinda puts you in mind of Goodie Mobs classic record “Cell Therapy”. Gheechi provides is signature touch verbally by addressing police brutality and injustice in his verse, also adding his well-known sing songy style on the hook. He’s also garnered a solid reputation over the years as one of the most conscience rapping brothers in the city of Anderson.

Gheechi pops up again on the grimy street thriller “Trust NONiga” but ILL throws a surprise curve at cha on this joint, he employs the talents of the not heard from in a while, A.N.D.’s North-Side Veteran trapper/rapper hustler-- Weetstraw. Shouts to Pee-Wee on a musical note, it was good to hear him spit again on the mic! 

A.N.D. Westside Veteran Conscious Emcee Gheechi Black aka Ricky Joe

The song “Dollar Circulate” features ILL Gates at his finest on a 9^th Wonder influenced boom bap track espousing his unapologetic Pyrex recipe on how some A.N.D. street hustlers in the city make that paper maneuver around, you know as in “Circulate” folks if you get my pun.

For the track “Tired of Being Broke” the Westside’s Original Gutter Brother himself D-ROB makes a cameo along with “Rah Rah” aka Rah Eastwood aka Cartel Eastwood who hails from the East Brick (East-side) side of the A.N.D. of whom both artist have been highlighted on my site in their independent respective featured articles. Just do a google search of them using djtuc999 as your anchor keyword. In retrospect I’ve always advocated Anderson artist and also Dj’s by the way, should move collectively in order to cross promote each others music as a whole. ILL Gates is on the right track basically saying I may not subscribe to your style of trendy music but it doesn’t matter just bring your rap style and we’ll make something special happen just the same. WORKING TOGETHER is the key and I hope you younger artist reading this follow their example.

Another joint that really caught my attention was this song called “This Is My Life” another 9^th Wonder inspired hip hop track that added the proverbial icing on the Microsoft Paper album cake. It stars another Westside Veteran by the name of Nimrod which you should be familiar with after the detailed article I wrote on him back over the summer. Nimrod can spit on anything just give him the track and a little time and he will be ready to lace it. D-Ro and Rah Rah shine also on this boom bap banger least I forget. My overall opinion on this ILL Gattes album is, its mostly true skool based boom bap influence may not appeal to today’s new crop of gimmick radio listening millennials. But for the seasoned vets and students of true skool hip hop culture it will be a welcomed breath of fresh air.

 Don’t get me wrong ILL was crafty and smart enough to throw in a few conducive millennial joints, but the majority of the album vibe has that classic hip hop feel. And for that I salute his effort because he may have compromise his music just a bit, but never sold out his roots. In the age of parasitic rap sell-outs A TALENTED MAN OF CHARACTER he is, forever being respected and remembered in the A.N.D., we need more artist like him as an example to follow. Respect will always out last cash on the street. ILL is the perfect example.

Recently a News Promo piece was aired on WYFF Channel 4 here in the upstate(video below) which featured two prominent businessmen whom hail from Anderson, SC. Here in Da A.N.D. they really need no introduction if you are already a frequent visitor of this site. But If not the company is known as P&W Film Productions (Pond & Wideman) and it's spear-headed by one Landrick Pond aka "Prafessa" and two Anthony Wideman.  Both brothers have been extensively high-lighted on my site, if this is your first time surfing over at djtuc999 urban Voice of da A.N.D..
